Proctorio FAQ

The security of online exams is important. The BYU Center for Teaching & Learning, which oversees the Testing Center as well as Learning Suite, has been exploring multiple options for maintaining exam integrity. One of these is Proctorio, a remote semi-automated proctoring service. The University has decided to provide a limited number of Proctorio licenses to faculty, which you can use for high-stakes tests and exams.

  • Proctorio is an exam monitoring service that uses students' webcams and microphones to record them while they are taking tests online. The service automatically flags suspicious behavior (looking away from the computer screen, too much talking, multiple faces in view, etc), which faculty then can review to determine whether any cheating has taken place.

For more basic information, visit the Proctorio website.

  • Yes, Proctorio is fully integrated in Learning Suite as well as Canvas.

  • Students will need to have a sufficiently modern computer running the latest operating system. They will also need a webcam and microphone. They must use the latest version of Chrome as their browser (even if they are on a Mac) and will be required to download and install a Chrome Extension.

They will be required to give permission for Proctorio to access their camera and microphone and to be recorded the entire time they take the test. More helps for students can be found here: https://proctorio.com/support.

  • You will start by setting up your exam in Learning Suite or Canvas. Proctorio requires the use of the Chrome browser only (even if you are on a Mac) and you will need to download and install the Chrome Extension for Proctorio, just as your students will.

You will be able to choose from different general security settings for your exam. There are also more detailed settings if you are interested.

Beyond these general settings, you can adjust the frame metrics as well. Frame metrics settings allow you to decide how much and what activity is tolerated. Higher levels will catch more incidents and thus will create more events for you to review.

  • No—Proctorio does monitor the students taking the exam, but you will need to personally review all flagged events and decide if there is evidence of cheating. The software only flags possible incidents, managed by the level of security you decided in the setup.

Once a student has taken an exam, the software analyzes the footage and flags instances where student behavior fell in the red area (based on the frame metric settings you chose). Proctorio then tallies these instances and produces a suspicion level metric. Proctorio recommends that you review all incidents in the red threshold, or those exams where 60% or more of the frames included an abnormality. You should also consider reviewing those in the yellow threshold, as those have between 35% and 59% of the frames which include abnormalities.
