Can we show images or play video clips during remote class sessions without violating copyright law? What about distributing copyrighted articles or other reading materials to students? This session answers these questions and provides practical solutions and strategies for avoiding common copyright pitfalls encountered by instructors in remote educational settings.

One of the challenges of teaching remotely is access to course materials, be they a textbook, lab manual, or lecture slides. Two potential solutions are Open Educational Resources (OER) and materials electronically available through the Harold B. Lee Library.

How can we provide students with the right kind of support to succeed in online learning? This session will show some simple but effective ways to help students stay engaged in the course, develop more self-direction, create community, and learn how to learn more effectively.

Learning outcomes are (or should be) one of your first answers when a student asks, “Why am I taking this course?” Learning outcomes should also drive the organization of your course. This workshop will help you revise or create learning outcomes that help put the “why” into your teaching.

To learn well, students need time to process what they are learning. This training provides you with tools to prepare your students before live interaction; to provide a space for students to meaningfully process the information while you are together; and activities after the lecture is over.

If you are teaching live remote classes on Zoom (or some other video conferencing tool), it can be challenging to keep students focused and engaged. This training provides some simple principles, strategies and tools that can help you engage students, build community, and enhance learning.

CORE—Care for students; Organization; Relevance; and Evaluation and Assessment—are the four core principles of effective (online) teaching. This training provides examples of how to put these principles into practice and spark ideas for you and your class. We also help you target tools and training you need to make it happen.
